I am trilled thrilled to be part of this exhibition of Latin American artists at The Mystic Museum of Art, located in Mystic-Connecticut. Throughout history, human beings have migrated from one place to another—whether for a season or a lifetime, whether alone or in groups, whether compelled by hardship or drawn by opportunity. Regardless of the circumstances, every displacement raises the question of what to take and what to leave behind. At various times, we have all had to learn new ways and possibly new languages in unfamiliar environments. How do you adapt? Does your identity change? Who determines where you belong, and how? Perhaps most importantly, how can a settled society gain wisdom and resilience from newcomers? With the number of displaced people worldwide reaching record highs, questions about our capacity to coexist and thrive together are among the most crucial issues of our time. This spring, the Mystic Museum of Modern Art (MMoA) partners with Expressiones Cultural Center to explore the complex experience of migration.
