About image

I question concepts that relate to sex, gendered representation, and nudity and aspects of gender-nonconformity and the societal pressures and imposition of masculinity and manhood. It also looks at how the queer body has had to heal and survive aspects of the status quo, impacted by capitalism and worldwide power dynamics. I am interested in the normalized, binary construction of gender, assigned at birth based solely on body parts. My collages/mixed media/paintings deconstruct preconceived and traditional categorizations of gender, pushing the viewer to expand their minds and consider new ones. It requires many hours of work, not only to find the necessary images and build a story with them. The cut-out images that I appropriate and work with are placed in backgrounds to work with my brushes and oil colors. Transparent layers of oil paint are placed one over the other, perfecting the depth effects' lights and shadows.

By appropriating, cutting, pasting, and repainting images from popular culture, I create new narratives in my current practice. The scenes in my collages showcase dialogues between fictional characters, similar to children's stories when they play with dollhouses. Characters perform their sexual and gendered identities for the public in a small, self-contained space resembling a theater, looking for acceptance. They all have something to say. At times, they mutter taboo ideas, gossip, and secrets.

Born in Lima, Peru, studied Art at the "Escuela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes del Perú" and graduated from art school with several awards and honors. In 1992-‐93, he moved to Chile and resumed his studies there, studying for his Bachelor of Aesthetics Degree and later his Master's degree in History and Theory of Art, later an MFA at SVA. He taught Art for many years in Chilean universities before moving to the United States. Once here, he taught at Mitchell College, UCONN, TTCC, and York Correctional in CT. Garaycochea cofounded Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT, in 2009, a non‐profit organization that promotes understanding between the Anglo and Hispanic communities through the arts to bridge cultural differences and showcase Latin American arts and culture. As curator of the artist residency at Expressions, he has promoted and encouraged the careers of numerous Latin American artists. He shares his time working as the Adult Programs and the New New Yorkers program manager at the Queens Museum in New York while keeping his artistic practice alive in his Manhattan studio as a studio program member at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and participating in various exhibitions.

PERMISSIONS November 18, 2020 – January 9, 2021 The 2020 SHIFT Residency Exhibition On View By Appointment Virtual Opening: Wednesday, December 2, 2020, 6-8 pm Artists Hernease Davis, Asha Ganpat, Guido Garaycochea, Joy Garnett, Gi (Ginny) Huo, Jordan Lord, Shona Masarin-Hurst, Monika Wuhrer. Curated by Maya Suess. *** EFA Project Space is thrilled to present Permissions, an exhibition of new works by the 2019/20 cohort of the SHIFT Residency for Arts Workers, curated by Maya Suess. There is no way to introduce this exhibition without acknowledging the current time of unexpected upheavals and the resulting profound shift to the infrastructure of our lives. During a period when restriction has become our new normal, many of us have been granting ourselves and each other allowances in surprising and mindful ways. From tailoring our movements to ever-changing municipal ordinances, to navigating our closest relationships, we have marked a slippage in the boundary between what is personal and what is public, as agreements of consent are required for even the simplest tasks. As the world moved into a time of global pandemic, economic distress, and a deep reckoning with systemic racism, SHIFT residents – who have been meeting monthly over the past year – channeled their experiences of change, transition, and shifting expectations to create new bodies of work. Permissions emerged from this ground of collective and individual change, born from a need to react, respond, and rest. Within this context, the SHIFT Residents have been engaged in an expansive exploration of accessibility, driven by the collaborative project led by SHIFT resident Jordan Lord. Permissions will be presented in person at EFA Project Space, and through image, text, video and audio made available on Project Space’s website. A special opening reception and online viewing room launch party will be held on December 2, 2020 from 6-8 pm. The works in this exhibition ask us to rest, to escape, to create fantastical worlds, to devise our own symbols, to leave town, to stay home, to choose how we respond to ourselves, to others, and to the systems in which we live. They remind us that we can ask for, offer, take or give ourselves permission.

Layered - Lily Pad Gallery at Milwaukee. A group online Exhibition Layered is about explorations, possibilities, imaginings, and openings. Its five featured artists combine color, texture, and form to create collages that are greater than the sum of their parts, allowing for a complex combination of emotion and greater inspiration to be felt. Guido Garaycochea's collages deconstruct preconceived and traditional categorizations of gender, pushing the viewer to expand their minds and consider new ones. Susan Hall's soft, enigmatically symbolic portraits are particularly unique. The subjects' features are universal and, that they are deeply rooted in her scumbled, fresco-like surfaces, gives them timeless nonspecific space in which to live.

  •   594 Broadway, Suite 701, New York, NY 1002

Opening Thursday, Feb 20th 6-8 pm at VillageOne Space (594 Broadway Suite701) Exhibition on view Feb 13- March 31, 2020 Altered Visions presents works by artists Amy Hill and Guido Garaycochea at VillageOne Space in SoHo. Presenting works inspired by Pop Art and Surrealism in equal measure, the artists’ work complement one another, providing a reflection of the past by presenting historical art figures who have defined the landscape of contemporary art. Amy Hill’s contemporary visions of iconic Renaissance and Flemish portraiture bring the prosaic into the present day. Presenting contemporary takes on classic artists such as Jan Van Eyck and Hans Holbein the Younger, Hill translates these venerated masters into a modern-day lexicon. Guido Garaycochea presents absurdist, cross-generational narratives framed by cultural devices such as fashion and popular music. Works such as “Andi’s Nap” allows insights into the interior of a subject we think we know well by accessing Warhol’s inner “thoughts” masked as an interior of a room. Humorous and inventive, Garaycochea returns to his reference points by extending a dialogue from notable art history moments, extending a bridge from the past to a modern day audience. Garaycochea and Hill both deftly engage with how viewers frame history through the lens of the present, invoking the spirit of great artists of the past while striking out on their own to define their artistic practices for a new generation. --- VillageOne, located 594 Broadway, Suite 701 in SoHo, is an art gallery with a co-working space designed for creative minds across communication, fashion and photography. Seeking to promote individuality and imagination along with artistic expression, VillageOne is a site for diversity, beauty and collaboration to coexist in harmony.

  •   Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Article published in the newspaper El Heraldo from Tegucigalpa-Honduras on Sunday, June 2, 2019. It is a brief review of the exhibition that is being shown for the second time in that country: "Mas que mis errores" ( More than my mistakes). Is a body of work, my visual response to former inmate's interviews. Former inmates who have been deprived of their rights, were imprisoned and answered the following question to me: What is to be an inmate? Each of the participants (the audios are part of the exhibition) respond in different ways and cover a fairly large spectrum of emotions. The exhibition is currently on view.
